It Happened Here

The First Victims

This tobacco barn is where the murders began.

Carrie (age 12) and Maybell (age 7) were found here. Their father, Charlie Lawson, shot them as they walked down the country road to visit their aunt.

Charlie dragged both bodies into the barn and placed rocks under their heads like pillows.

The others

Charlie went back to the house and killed his wife and four children. You can see the mantle where Marie was standing when she was shot. The white crib in the foreground was for 4-month-old Mary Lou.

Funeral

The family was buried together, youngest to oldest, in a 21″ grave. Baby Mary Lou was buried in her mother’s arms.

The funeral home did not have enough white caskets, so Charlie’s casket was gray. In the photo at left you can see they were short of casket holders, so they used a piano bench for the smallest one.

The grave was 21′ long was 21′
